What Is Viewability in Display Advertising?
An impression can be logged as “served” and still never actually appear on a screen — loaded below the fold, tucked behind another element, or closed before it ever entered view. Viewability is the metric that separates ads that were technically delivered from ads a person had a real chance to see, and it’s become a standard line item in how display advertising performance gets judged.

What Viewability Actually Measures
Viewability answers a narrower question than “was this ad served?” It asks: did enough of the ad’s pixels appear inside a visible part of the user’s screen, for long enough, for a person to plausibly have registered it? An impression can pass every technical delivery check — the tag fired, the creative loaded, the bid won — and still fail viewability if it rendered off-screen or scrolled past in a fraction of a second.
The distinction matters because served impressions and viewable impressions are counted separately in reporting. A campaign can look fully delivered on a served-impression basis while a meaningful share of that spend went toward placements that were never actually visible — inventory low on the page, ad units inside collapsed containers, or slots that get resized or covered by other content immediately after load.
The MRC Standard: 50% for 1 Second
The Media Rating Council (MRC), the industry body that accredits measurement standards for digital advertising, defines the baseline threshold most platforms report against: at least 50% of an ad’s pixels must be in a viewable part of the browser window for a minimum of one continuous second. Below that combined threshold — either too little of the ad on screen, or in view for too short a time — the impression is not counted as viewable, even though it was served.
Two conditions have to be met together, not separately:
- Area threshold — at least half the ad’s total pixel area must be within the visible viewport, not just any single pixel touching the visible region
- Duration threshold — that area coverage has to hold continuously for at least one second; a fast scroll that briefly crosses 50% and immediately continues past does not qualify

How Viewability Is Tracked Technically
Viewability measurement runs inside the browser, watching the ad unit’s position relative to the visible viewport as the page scrolls and resizes. Two mechanisms handle this in modern implementations:
Intersection Observer
The browser’s native Intersection Observer API lets a measurement script watch how much of an element intersects with the viewport without repeatedly polling scroll position, which keeps the check lightweight on page performance. It reports the intersection ratio continuously, and a timer starts counting the moment that ratio crosses the 50% mark.
Third-Party Verification Tags
Independent measurement vendors layer an additional verification pixel or script on top of the ad tag itself, producing a viewability read that isn’t dependent solely on the publisher’s own reporting. This is the layer that gives advertisers a cross-checked number they can compare across different publishers and SSPs on equal footing.

Format-Specific Viewability Thresholds
The 50%-for-1-second rule is the baseline for standard display units, but larger and video formats carry adjusted thresholds because a bigger or moving creative needs a different bar to represent a genuine view:

How to Check and Improve Viewability
- Pull a viewability report by placement, not just by campaign — averages across an entire campaign hide individual placements where viewability is far below the rest
- Flag any placement under roughly 50-60% viewable — this is a common working threshold advertisers use to decide what’s worth keeping active without waiting for a hard universal cutoff
- Cross-reference low-viewability placements against conversion data — a placement can have mediocre viewability and still convert if the traffic quality is strong, so don’t cut on viewability alone
- Check ad position on the page, not just the domain — the same publisher can carry both above-the-fold and far-below-the-fold inventory under one line item
- Review whether lazy-loading or infinite scroll is delaying render — some layouts don’t load the ad creative until the user scrolls near it, which can either help or hurt viewability depending on implementation
- Set a recurring cadence to re-check — publisher layouts change, and a placement that was viewable last quarter can quietly drop after a page redesign

Viewability vs. Related Metrics
Viewability is easy to conflate with other measurement terms that sound similar but answer different questions:
- Viewability vs. CTR — an ad can be 100% viewable and still get zero clicks; viewability measures opportunity to be seen, not response
- Viewability vs. brand safety — brand safety asks whether the surrounding content is appropriate; viewability asks whether the ad itself was visible, regardless of context
- Viewability vs. ad fraud / IVT — a fraudulent impression can technically register as “viewable” to a bot-driven check; viewability tools and fraud-detection tools solve different, complementary problems
- Viewability vs. completion rate — completion rate (mainly a video metric) tracks whether playback finished; viewability only tracks whether the player was in view, which is a precondition for completion, not the same measurement
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Judging performance on served impressions alone — without a viewable-impression view, cost-per-acquisition math looks better than the campaign’s actual delivered visibility supports
- Treating viewability as pass/fail at the campaign level — a healthy campaign average can still hide individual placements running well below standard
- Assuming higher viewability always means better performance — viewability is a precondition for a person to notice an ad, not a guarantee of engagement or conversion
- Ignoring format-specific thresholds — applying the standard 50%-for-1-second rule to a large or video unit misreads what “viewable” means for that format
- Never re-checking placements over time — page layouts and ad-slot positions change, and viewability can drift without any campaign-side change at all
